Information to Pharmacists

From the desk of the editor

Welcome to the July 2014 homepage edition of i2P (Information to Pharmacists) E-Magazine.
At the commencement of 2014 i2P focused on the need for the entire profession of pharmacy and its associated industry supports to undergo a renewal and regeneration.
We are now half-way through this year and it is quite apparent that pharmacy leaders do not yet have a cohesive and clear sense of direction.
Maybe the new initiative by Woolworths to deliver clinical service through young pharmacists and nurses may sharpen their focus.
If not, community pharmacy can look forward to losing a substantial and profitable market share of the clinical services market.
Who would you blame when that happens?
But I have to admit there is some effort, even though the results are but meagre.
In this edition of i2P we focus on the need for research about community pharmacy, the lack of activity from practicing pharmacists and when some research is delivered, a disconnect appears in its interpretation and implementation.

Helen comes to SHPA with a long history of active involvement in SHPA at many levels – she is an SHPA Fellow, has served two terms on the SHPA NSW Branch committee, was a member of SHPA Federal Council from 1995-2003 where she held positions of Secretary, Vice President and President and she has chaired SHPA’s Research and Development Grants Advisory Committee. Helen’s achievements and commitment to pharmacy practice were recognised in 2005 when she was awarded the GlaxoSmithKline Medal of Merit.

Motivated by her commitment to patient safety, quality use of medicines and quality improvement in health care, Helen’s involvement in pharmacy and healthcare-related organisations is extensive.  She is a member of the NSW Therapeutic Advisory Group, the Pharmacy Board of Australia Registration and Examinations Committee, Australian Pharmacy Council and she represents Allied Health Professions Australia on the Australian Council of Health Care Standards (ACHS), is a board member of ACHS and currently chairs ACHS Standing Committee.  Since July 2010, she has held the position of President of the Pharmacy Council of NSW. Helen was also a member of the Independent Panel to monitor progress on NSW’s reform of the State’s public hospital system.

Helen was instrumental in the establishment of the Master of Pharmacy postgraduate degree course at the University of Newcastle in 2004; in recognition of her contribution the Faculty of Health presented Helen with an award for Outstanding Contribution to the Faculty of Health from a member of the Community.  There are many other initiatives, causes and organisations to which Helen has contributed her drive and vision.

SHPA President Sue Kirsa said “SHPA is fortunate to be able to appoint a person of Helen’s calibre to the CEO position.  Her experience, leadership, vision and commitment make her a perfect fit for this position and I believe that SHPA will prosper during her tenure.”
