Welcome to the first homepage edition of i2P for 2012.
In many ways it has been a slow start to the New Year because of having to deal with the “leftovers” from 2011.
One of those items for i2P was that a third-party provider to the site did not advise of a code change to the security section in our subscribe panel, creating a range of frustrated subscribers not able to get on board.
We apologise to all those potential subscribers who were unable to register with us in the second half of 2011, but if you try once more you should have no problem.

Introducing current ideas, perspectives and issues, to the profession of pharmacy | |
Welcome to the March edition of i2P – Information to Pharmacists. You may have noiticed if you receive i2P by email, that we have simplified our mail out presentation.
This was because the code in our earlier version appeared to be too unstable to maintain, hence the simpler presentation.
This month we note the escalation of the “turf” wars that have emerged between the major health professions – doctors, pharmacists and nurses.
We have also noted that the PGA is holding its own with the doctors (see article by Peter Sayers “The Three Ring Circus” and also the Pharmedia commentary.
It looks like no holds barred until new boundaries are agreed between the health professions.
The Pharmacist Support Service has now split away from the PSA as a separate incorporated group and details for this item can be found in the “Recent News” column.
Is it a sign of the times that this form of help is being accessed more frequently?
All our usual columnists are on board and we would point you to John Dunlop’s provocative column titled “Dispense with Community Pharmacy”. This may just challenge your view of the world as will Pharma-Goss, by Rollo Manning.
Rollo has a number of viewpoints you might like to consider.
The IT section with David More’s blog and Pat Gallagher’s recent paper are worth a look, Andrew Byrne is back with some interesting information on harm minimisation.
Barry Urquhart, Mark Neuenschwander and Harvey Mackay are back with their usual flair as is Loretta Marron, who forces us, as pharmacists, to look at ourselves in the mirror with regularity.
There is also an article on the criminalisation of dispensing errors that you may need to read and action before another pharmacist’s life (professional and private) is ruined because insufficient legislation and guidelines are in place to ensure genuine dispensing errors are not criminalised.
Sigma Pharmaceuticals appears to be experiencing some difficulties (trading in shares suspended) and while we don’t wish to comment too deeply without sufficient background, it may well be that the extended credit terms bestowed on certain pharmacy chains may have come back to “bite them on the bum”. It is worrying to community pharmacy, because if Sigma was merged with another pharmacy wholesaler, the competitive balance would be tipped, leaving community pharmacy with few options.
We’ll follow developments closely.
Work your way through the range of news items and you will note that we continue to report on the aged care sector, a sector that has looming importance for pharmacy as our population expands within the 64+ age group, disproportionately to younger demographics.
Enjoy your read for March.
