Welcome to the May 2012 homepage edition of i2P-Information to Pharmacists. Rollo Manning has been having some time out having staples removed from the site of his open heart surgery. He is now at home recuperating in Darwin, having arrived home last Friday, beating a cold and hasty retreat from Canberra. We all wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully, he will be fit enough to contribute by next month.
This month, Pharmedia discusses the toll that is taken when someone complains about you to an authority without good cause. Well, the good news is that you can now take action to protect yourself if such a complaint is made, and that may even include action for defamation. Read about a recent case involving two doctors, with Mark Coleman drawing on personal experience to illustrate.

Dementia is a major health issue in Australia and is increasing in line with the ageing population.
One of the better government initiatives has been to plan and set up a range of Dementia Day Care Centres, the first of which has opened in Orange, NSW.
Given that over a lifetime we seemingly start and end in a similar state (i.e.childlike) it seems natural to find solutions for dementia patients in paralleling early childhood solutions.
We have Day Care for children now well established.
Day Care for adults will relieve the pressure for many carers and family members who act as carers.

A new $965,000 dementia day care centre has opened in the central west of NSW.
The centre in Orange is one of 16 day care centres being built as part of a joint Commonwealth and NSW Government Home and Community Care (HACC) program.
The Commonwealth Government contributed $458,000 to the project and the state government provided $308,000.
The Uniting Church Property Trust contributed land and services worth $190,000.
“Dementia day care centres are one way we are responding to the challenges of an ageing population by providing outings, day trips, support, nursing and health services to people with dementia and their carers,” said the NSW Minister for Ageing, Paul Lynch.
Federal Ageing Minister, Justine Elliot, said the centre in Orange would assist older residents who need assistance to continue living in their own homes.
“The centre is a good example of governments and the local community working together to make more support services available for the elderly and their carers,” she said.
“This centre, along with the others opening throughout NSW, [is] part of the Rudd Government’s approach to providing more services to assist people with dementia today, investing in staff training to improve care and investing in research.”
More than 73,000 people in NSW live with dementia and this number is expected to increase to 227,000 by 2050.
