Welcome to the first homepage edition of i2P for 2012.
In many ways it has been a slow start to the New Year because of having to deal with the “leftovers” from 2011.
One of those items for i2P was that a third-party provider to the site did not advise of a code change to the security section in our subscribe panel, creating a range of frustrated subscribers not able to get on board.
We apologise to all those potential subscribers who were unable to register with us in the second half of 2011, but if you try once more you should have no problem.

Medicines Management 2011, the 37th SHPA National Conference opened today in Hobart. With over 800 delegates, 80 presented papers and 200 posters, this year’s conference is yet another example of the enthusiasm and dedication of pharmacists in hospitals and other parts of the healthcare system to share their work and learn from their peers.
In the opening session, SHPA President Sue Kirsa presented the Fred J Boyd award – SHPA’s highest honour, to Bill Thomson. In presenting the award Sue Kirsa said “I am absolutely delighted to be able to present this well-deserved honour to Bill Thomson. Bill’s contribution to the pharmacy profession is matched by few. He has been an inspiration, role model and mentor to many SHPA members and has brought significant value to SHPA and to the pharmacy profession.”
This award is in recognition of Bill’s outstanding contribution to hospital pharmacy practice throughout his long career. Apart from his roles as a clinical pharmacist, pharmacy administrator and management consultant he has represented the pharmacy profession in many contexts.
Bill was a director of pharmacy for over 20 years – firstly at the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital, then the Austin Hospital and later the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. He then became the Executive Director of the Victorian Drug Usage Advisory Committee and the Victorian Therapeutic Advisory Group. In this role Bill was instrumental in the formation of the Council of Australian Therapeutic Advisory Groups – a network of therapeutic advisory groups, thus achieving his vision of highlighting the role of pharmacists in quality use of medicines and the benefits of collaboration between pharmacists, doctors and nurses in shaping the policy framework for medicines use in public hospitals.
Bill’s contribution to SHPA for more than 30 years has been enthusiastic, sustained and effective; with terms on the Victorian Branch, Federal Council, Board of Censors and as an editor on the Australian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy.
In nominating Bill for this award, Helen Matthews, Chair, SHPA Victorian Branch said that “Bill is a pharmacist who truly embodies the spirit of Fred J Boyd in the manner in which he has practised his profession and exhibited his leadership and inspirational abilities. He has employed vision, perseverance and dedication to achieve his goals which have unilaterally benefitted the Australian pharmacy profession as well as community health.”
In support of Bill’s nomination, Karen Kaye, Deputy CEO, NPS Better choices, Better health said that Bill’s “expertise and leadership within the profession has been widely recognised and his unwavering integrity and professionalism has made him a role model for many pharmacists and managers”.
Established in 1978, the Fred J Boyd award is named in memory of SHPA’s founding president and is the Society’s most prestigious recognition. It is awarded biennially to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to hospital pharmacy in Australia. The recipient is invited to present an occasional address during the SHPA national conference. Bill Thomson’s address will be published in the next issue of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research.
