Welcome to the May 2012 homepage edition of i2P-Information to Pharmacists. Rollo Manning has been having some time out having staples removed from the site of his open heart surgery. He is now at home recuperating in Darwin, having arrived home last Friday, beating a cold and hasty retreat from Canberra. We all wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully, he will be fit enough to contribute by next month.
This month, Pharmedia discusses the toll that is taken when someone complains about you to an authority without good cause. Well, the good news is that you can now take action to protect yourself if such a complaint is made, and that may even include action for defamation. Read about a recent case involving two doctors, with Mark Coleman drawing on personal experience to illustrate.

The Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI), the peak industry body representing non-prescription consumer healthcare products has arranged for visiting US experts to meet with the Australian medicines regulator to discuss evidence to support the efficacy and safety of children’s over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines
7th May, 2009
Visiting experts from the US industry association, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) will meet with the Therapeutic Goods Administration this week.
The meeting is designed to demonstrate to the TGA the range of measures being undertaken to reassure the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as it gathers information about children’s cough and cold products.
The makers of these medicines in the U.S. have commenced a wide-ranging research and education program to inform regulatory authorities, healthcare professionals and consumers.
The Scientific Director of ASMI, Dr Deon Schoombie said it was important that the Australian authorities had the opportunity to hear first hand about the range of measures being undertaken to better understand the benefits of paediatric cough and cold medicines.
“The leading makers of these medicines are working very closely with the FDA to provide the necessary evidence on safety and efficacy of such products.
“These initiatives will be important in ensuring that parents and carers have access to the best available treatments for their families,” he said.
The program being undertaken in the U.S. involves:
* A comprehensive efficacy and safety program for children aged two to 12 which will include pharmacokinetic studies to confirm the dosing for the eight most commonly used OTC oral cough and cold substances.
* Continued collection and review of available safety data. A comprehensive safety review in 2007 and data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the majority of adverse events associated with OTC oral paediatric cough and cold medicines are a direct result of accidental ingestion. Reducing these preventable errors is the cornerstone of the educational program.
* A comprehensive, national education program which has reached more than 100 million parents and carers, focusing on the importance of label instructions, dosing, storage of medicines and when to consult a doctor.
